A Bone to Pick...

Are there any other girls out there who are "plus-size", like me? I have to say, it gets rather annoying when you go to a website that you have been told has killer sales, and then find out that it is only for the "normal" sized females. Yeah, I'd love to lose weight. And needless to say, I'm most definitely trying. But as of right now, I'm still plus size and I would like to LOVE shopping. Right now, I can't say that I do.

I wouldn't say I'm plus size, I'm a little overweight for my age but sometimes I can get stuff that fits and sometimes I can't.
When I go to these 'plus size websites' I won't name any of the websites, but they aren't the cheapest. They aren't the same sales that we find on the highstreet or online, they can be expensive. Why can't they give bigger women the same prices like such stores as New Look?

It is true! But New Look do a great plus sized range and many items go into the sale. Saying this- Evans can be expensive but you can find some bargains in there sale too. As it is easier to find bigger shoe sizes that are wide in Evans than New Look. :)

Well, shopping is quite hard for me too. OK, I am normal sized but I have huge breasts so almost none of the clothes in shops fit me and that is the reason I like less and less of shopping. Why do designers design just for the anorectics...

i got big boobs too (30H) my bf wants me to wear tighter tops but i cant find any that fit decently n arent super-stretched and constrictive across my chest

I know what you mean. Its so frustrating to go into a store, and not be able to find anything that fits corectly because its either to big, or to small. I know of one store called Fashion Bug that has some decently cute things for my age(19) to my moms age(54) and beyond. N when they have sales, they are normally very good.

torrid is a great site

torrid has some cute clothes but doesn't go above about in normal sizes a 16-18. which for some people isn't big enough. and i'm trying to lose the weight but i am big chested which doesn't help in finding clothes that fit at all.

you're wrong--torrid goes up to size 24.

I am not plus sized, but I have a wonderful site to recommend. (They also have a wonderful selection of clothing, for fairly reasonable prices) and their sizes generally run from 14W-28W. Good luck, and I hope this is helpful!!

I have to say I'm in exactly the same boat! Drives me loopy! Theres never any bargains out there in plus sizes! They're always way over priced! Ok so we a little more material but there's no reason for the prices to be so inflated. Just makes me deflated.......
If anyone has any inspiration I would definitely like to know until my diet has worked its magic!

I generally do my cloth shopping either on eBay, or thrift stores. I don't necassarily (sp) have a hard time finding my size, but they are cheap alternatives for cloth shopping, and I usually get a lot of comments on my "second hand" clothes. So you might be able to find what your looking for there, and for a good price. :) Remember, someone's garbage could be your treasure! :) Lol.

I started getting into shape when most size 14 clothes didn't fit me anymore. I didn't even try to wear clothes normally in the juniors department, because to do that I would've had to go to plus sizes, and I just wasn't ready to cross that line, so I was stuck in the old ladies department. It totally killed my style. When I was overweight, I hated not only how stores would end their sizes at 10 or maybe 13, but also how hard it was to find clothes that didn't make me look like a total blimp.

Now I am a size 5/6 (after two years of very hard work) and if I order something online and it is a little tight, it is no big deal. When I was overweight, that was a huge deal. It meant that I just couldn't wear it. I stopped ordering clothes online completely because it was so frustrating. How clothes looked in the photos didn't have a thing to do with how they would look draped over my big butt.

And I totally know that this isn't what you're looking for, but I thought I'd drop the name of a WONDERFUL free site that helped me lose weight and get into shape - SparkPeople.com They have a site just for teens too - SparkTeens.com

I couldn't believe when I read your post that you used Spark People. I was so happy to find someone you had used it and was successful. I did a news type story on a few women who used it a couple of years ago and I was always wondering if it worked. Congratulations!

It's hard to say whats plus-size anymore. I feel like the media makes anything over a 2 plus size. I wear anywhere from a size 9-13 in Juniors on a good day, sometimes need a 15 depending on the jean. Shirts I range s-xl. Lol. I think I have a weird figure. For my height the BMI says I'm morbidly obese, but I'm only 5'3. So weighing 160 makes me "huge" I guess. Though, the BMI doesn't take structure and distribution of weight and such into account. I tend to hate shopping because nothing ever fits right. I'm right there with you, I wanna lose weight, I just don't have the energy T_T

Forever21.com has been a site that I've taken notice to. I myself am fairly petite but have some girlfriends that are bigger more vivacious and so I'm also on the look out for cute things for them. Forever21 has a plus size line of CUTE cute clothes that aren't made to make you look like an old lady or as if you're wearing maternity wear! In fact, I often see things on there that aren't made in my size and I get jealous!

Torrid is an amazing store (and I know it has already been mentioned), and they are not as cheap as Target but they are cheaper than Macy's and they have a great clearance section on their website! I love them and I think that they would be the perfect solution to your problem! ♥

I am not plus size myself but have several friends that are.
All of the sites suggested above have offered great gift items in the past. Do any of you ladies know where to find affordable boots with larger calves? The only knee height boots with wide calves that I can find are over $200 or are made for super models! I wear a size 6 1/2 and its assumed that I have small legs.

The only place I have ever found boots with wide calves is Famous Footwear. I have always been on the lookout for them because I too have super wide calves!

Torrid sells boots and shoes that are made for people with bigger feet and wider calves

I know some great places with stylish nd pretty fashions from Silhouettes and Coldwater Creek. They aren't cheap, but they aren't overly expensive, either. The styles definitely range from 20's - 60's. So there's probably a good shot you'll find something in either place!

I remember as a kid 5-7-9 was a store for petite women now those sizes are classed as average and anything over a size 12 is plus. I love Ross, Torrid and well i can normally find something just about anywhere. Each store seems to have a different size index so an extra large at one place seems to be a 2 x at another or vice versa, shopping online does have its advantages but i have found that it is best to go to the stores, your size in one brand may not be in another. Love your curves girls, some have to pay for what we got ;)

I like looking for hand made stuff on Etsy (http://www.etsy.com)

torrid.com, b&lu (bandlu.com), missphit.com, plussizefix.com, alloy.com...i also find some cute things at walmart of all places! not a lot of times, but every once in a while I luck out

and as for shoes that are stylish for those of us who have big feet...checkout barefoottess.com...she has name brands in our sizes!!!

I know exactly what you mean. especially in the bottoms department.
I have worn the same swimsuit for the past three summers because nothing else I find seems to work.
I am 5'1" and I weigh 165lbs.
I wouldn't really say I'm fat.
I use to dance a lot in high school and my legs are REALLY strong.
but thick thunder thighs run in the family so its really difficult for me to find something not too big around the waste....but wide enough around the thighs....but not too long because I'm really short.
needless to say, its a huge pain in the Arse.
They need to make a store called WeirdlyShapedYetAttractiveSizedGirls R Us for all the ladies who don't look like toothpicks or Hippo's but something nice and lovely in betwixt the two. haha

I'm a size 18-20. I love Alloy for pants and Casual Living as great dresses and tops.

www.greatglam.com has loads of cute clothes for women of all sizes. I buy from them all the time becuase I hate shopping in stores and looking like everyone else.

try debs.com or even go to dots.com i'm a size 24-28 on top and on bottoms im a 22-26 so its also very hard for me to find dressess that will fit right.

Have any of you tried companies such as www.jdwilliams,www.simplybe.co.uk,www.fashionworld.co.uk? their all very goodm i use them all and the clothes are very reasonably priced too.

All these sites sound great but its nothing like hitting a mall for a good shop T_T

I really like the store Deb. I'm not plus sized, but my friend is, and she's the one who introduced me to the place.

Well the average woman in America is a size 14. The fashion industry starts plus sizes at size 12, and sometimes even 10. Therefore the average woman is plus sized, the trim women are medium, and the tiny women are what is considered idea. It's really lame. I remember in the past being a sized 10 and I was pretty small, but I was still four sizes too big to even be considered for regular modeling, and a little too small at like 130 lbs to be a plus model. Clothing makers are a bit ridiculous sometimes. Now at around a size 16, I wish stores would come to their senses and purchase more plus sized clothes because it seems when I search the rack all the larges are sold out and the rest are xs, small, and medium. XS clothes make me angry lol.

I am on the boarder line where regular clothes are to small and plus sizes seem to be to big. My waist is a good bit smaller than my butt/hips, so finding pants that fit is annoying. If I get them over my big butt then they are to big on my waist, if they're the right size for my waist they wont fit over my butt. I have found that buying pants that are drawstring tend to be a little better to fit, but it's hard to find sexy clothes that fit correctly. I really love to dress sexy because I think I am attractive and I think I have a nice looking body. I can certainly understand your frustrations.

Finding pants is the biggest shopping pain for me because I have a fairly flat butt with wide hips and large thighs, so if i get pants that fit my thighs and hips, they slide off my butt.

omg i thought i was alone, i have my moms shape which is big hips, legs, butt, and a small waist so looking for pants is a hassle for me and sometimes belts just make it worse

i went to evans which sells larger clothes but they were too big for their sizes! m&s size 16 was waaay smaller then evans size 16. i was so confused n swamped lol

torrid is an amazing site,

As others have said before, all of these sites are fantastic, but there's nothing like going to the mall with your girlfriends and just being able to SHOP. That's my only issue.

True that, true that.

I have that problem, too. My torso is normal sized; I normally wear a large. But my bottom is a completely different story. I have large hips. My grandmother liked to tell me that I have "child-bearin' hips". And to add on to the fact that I have large hips, I'm extremely tall. I have found that Maurice's has really good clothes for plus-sized women. If you are average height, they offer even more possibilities.

Yes! Torrid.com
They're great, I just made a big purchase with them. :D
They are a little more expensive, but they DO have sales all the time, you can go to retailmenot.com for good promo codes.

fashion bug is good but it can get pretty pricey but they have some really cute clothes lane bryant is also ok and old navy has a really good plus size section online. (most online sites do)

Torrid.com does go up much further than 18's actually. Their sizing system is a little different, so check the guide. citychiconline.com is my other favourite plus size store for younger, hip looks.

I agree. A lot of my friends shop torrid or Maurice's has a girl's 'plus size'. unfortunately you might have to scour a bit in stores like JC Pennies, Younkers, or Kohls.

I know there a lot of different body types out there, and something may look good on one person but not on the next. However, I find myself saying, "That style should not be made for a plus size woman... there is no way that will look good on anyone that is bigger."

I'm not small... I weigh 250lbs and I'm only 5'4". I wear a size 22/24 in most things, sometimes a 20. I wouldn't consider myself conservative when it comes to clothing and style, but even I wouldn't dream of wearing some of these things around the house, let alone in public.

It seems like clothing designers think that plus size women are either very curvy or very old. What about younger people who don't have any shape but round? I'm only 31, and most of the clothes I find are either too big in the hips, too small in the chest, or just don't look right. I want trendy, but not trashy... Any ideas for us?

UGH. We do have Pennington, addition elle and mxm in canada , but their prices can be atrocious! I find more of my clothing at walmart than anywhere else.

My body is so strange, I can never find any kind of clothing that fits right! Even bras and underwear! I have small boobs, no butt, wide hips, small thighs, broad shoulders and I'm over weight. Seriously, I HATE clothing! (too bad I LOVE shopping so much hahaha)

I would just like to put it out there to all you girls who aren't a size 2-6 that when you're done with your clothing and are ready to get rid of it, PLEASE consider donating! I used to volunteer at the food bank a lot, and I saw women who really couldn't afford to buy themselves clothing, but could never find anything in the donation bins either. Plus size donations are SO hard to come by and there are a lot of plus size poorer people who really really can't afford to buy new clothing. Same for men! Welfare doesn't exactly give enough money for a person to eat healthy :(

I live in england and im a size 16 which is apparently the average size for a women over here but i hate shopping i go to new look and look at these tiny tops and stuff but the 14+ Sizes are in a cornor all on there own so im extremely self conscious about Shopping! I hate it i hate feeling that im huge because im not a size 6!

Yeahh, Erin's right. Forever21 has a line called Faith21. There's some really cute things there. =] I do have to say stay away from DEB their things may look cute but they wear out and look nasty after having them for like a month. JC Penny and Macy's have some super cute things, too. It is really hard to find things sometimes but it is possible you just have to keep an upbeat attitude when you take off to go to the mall because these things can be very discouraging.

The only problem that I have with Forever21 is I love dresses but I'm not one for showing all of my leg and all of their dresses are either Maxi dresses or mini dresses (and I'm not one for being completely covered up, either). So if you are a dress lover but aren't one for showing a lot of leg, don't go there for your dress purchases.
