Defining Denim: A Girl's Guide To J...
Are they jeans? Are they leggings? Are there pockets? Do they have zippers? The denim legging aka "jegging" is a must have leg wear this season as it leaves most asking many a question. To the above quandaries the answers go as follows: yes, yes, possibly, and well, sometimes. Arriving on the fashion scene about a little less then a year ago and ten months later have blown up, appearing everywhere from Barney's to Forever 21. Understanding the "jeggings" craze can be a bit overwhelming to those novice to the denim-legging offspring. However think of them as you would any hybrid and getting the just will be easier then zipping of your new go to denim BFFs in no time. For example, as ridiculous as this may sound, "jeggings" can be comparable to a designer dog, such as a Puggle. Part Pug, part Beagle, Puggles are a hybrid that can either meet in the middle of the two breeds or favor one side more than the other. The same is the case for the "jegging". Some tend to favor more towards leggings, while others derive the design principles of jeans.
As a whole, "jeggings" that feature the classic jean accents usually fair better than those with a pure elastic waste band, sans pockets, when it comes to flattery. A few faves from high to low (featured above) include everyone's favorite classic denim brand, Levi's 525 Red Tab Legging available for $39.99 and Topshop's $70 Jegging, available in knit and vintage washes. For those who care to chuck some extra cash towards this gym and like to splurge on denim, J. Brand's Denim Legging is a sure thing as well, in regards to fit and the meeting of the best of what both jeans and leggings have to offer. Paired with a tee, button down blouse, or blazer and this trend becomes a new take on an instant classic.
For those of you, who care to say adios to zippers, buttons, and belt loops of any kind, checkout the wide variety of "jeggings" offered by Bloomingdales, such as Daddy Long Legs Denim Leggings for $38 or Juicy Couture’s wide band (and perhaps a bit more flattering yet pricier) Denim Legging for $88. Pairing these more legging type "jeggings" with a mid-length chunky cotton sweater or tunic is probably your best bet in terms of both style and figure flattery.
Other tips in regards to this trend? As with anything, personal preference is key and remembering that no one knows you, or your body, better than, well... you. If you are interested into venturing into the world of "jeggings" but want to tread lightly, simply stick with basics in dark washes and black (always a girl and her physique's best friend). For those of you with lengthy long legs or the confidence to go all out, perhaps you can venture into lighter vintage or grey washes. Just remember, as with any trend, tread lightly, use your judgment, and have fun!
Regardless, if you are someone that loves to cruise around town with the same comfort of wearing long johns yet still have a desire to look presentable then jeggings are your best friend. The comfort of "jeggings” can be summed up pretty easily. The ideal companion to an early morning flight, hopping on the subway, or driving about town, this is the trend that allows you to maintain your ever chic look while taking on new adventures in style.
