Greasy Hair... No Idea How to Deal with ...

I suffer from really greasy hair and I have since I was 13 years old. I am now 22 and still haven't found a solution to it. No matter what I do the next day after washing my hair it is greasy as hell. I have tried lots of different things, from vinegar, lemon juice, expensive shampoos to really cheap shampoos and even medicated shampoo from the doctor. What out there really works? Please help!

I know for me that my hair gets really greasy when I wash it every day. I was told to wash it every other and if possible skip the conditioner every other time because that can really make your hair greasy. Hope this helps :)

I have the same problem!! Its ok for the day its washed, but I wake up the next day and it looks terrible. everyone says wash it every other day, but i shower every single day, and just wash my hair when I do. I use conditioner every day as well, but because it keeps it looking nice and get rid of knots, and i only use it on the ends. greasy hair sucks!

Your hair is most likely greasy because your scalp is dry. When it's dry, it produces tons of oil to make up for it, and that transfers to your hair.

I agree with the first poster. Stop washing it everyday. When you wash your hair everyday, you're stripping your hair of oils, which is causing your pores to work overtime and produce MORE oil to make up for it. It's the same as if you wash your face too much- when you strip your face of oils, your pores produce more oils, making your face greasier.

I know it seems hard, but washing your hair every other day will "teach" your hair to produce less oil. It will take a week or two for your hair to get used to it, so you'll have greasy hair for a while, but once your hair gets used to it, it will produce less oil, making your hair less greasy. If your hair is looking greasy but it's not a day to take a shower, then either buy a spray-in shampoo or use baby powder on it. The baby powder will suck up all the excess oil so you can go that one more day before you shower.

Also, don't condition the top of your hair on your scalp. When you condition, just do it on the tips or your hair. Try out some organic tea tree shampoos, as that might help with the dry scalp and greasy hair. Good luck!

I get greasy hair the next day as due to dry scalp, do I wash it at night and rinse it in the AM and its fine for the day, unless I play with my hair a lot.

Good luck!

Same issue here. I generally wash it every other day and on the off days the parts around my face sometimes just need a bit of dry shampoo dabbed on, like Green Rootine. It works!

I agree about only washing your hair every other day
Try the bastiste dry shampoo stuff. I use it when my hair is greasy or when I go camping. It smells really nice too :)

I agree with anonymous #1

BUT--
Keep in mind that shampoos and conditioners may couse the problem as well. Stay away from "see-through" or clear shampoos, and conditioners if there are any. These clear shampoos are oil based and will strip your hair of natural oils and then put unnatural oils back in....ergo, the greasy hair. Use cream-based shampoos and conditioners only, washing every other day, and you will see and feel an obvious difference! I strongly recommend head and shoulders, but that can get expensive. I use Garnier Fructis Long and Strong Shampoo and Conditioner when I can't afford H&S, and its the best yet! Any CREAM based pair from Herbal Essences is great, too, especially if you like tons of different scents.
Try it out!

i agree with every other day too, but for my greasy hair I use ONLY conditioner, because shampoo strips your hair causing your scalp to produce more oil.

I don't have this problem, but I've heard powder shampoo works to mop up grease. Also, try not to use any products other than what you use in the shower. I use curling mousses and gels to keep my waves under control, and I definitely notice that my hair gets oilier faster when I use them. And when you condition, only go from the ears down. Steer clear of the roots.

try products with all natural ingredients in it. You will have to go to a special shop for it. Products with chemicals in it (The shampoo shouldn't froth too much as that is all the chemicals) Can strip the hair of all its natural oils and I think adds unnatural oils in. Its way more expinsive but is fantastic. Chaz Dean Wen products is a good example (this is the most expensive but you can get cheaper from health stores)

Chaz Dean Wen you can look at www.chazdeanwen.com

Thanks very much girls. i dont conditon my hair as its nice and soft from shampooing and I use H&S.
I have heard that putting talc in your hair has meant to help but havent tried it.
I can't even style my hair without it getting greasy.
I shall try some of these methods and get back to you with the results. hopefully something will work.

Lush.com has awesome products too!

Same problem here. One day I went to the hairdresser and there was a new girl there. She told me to go and buy some cheap shampoo, but to buy shampoo for oily/greasy to normal hair. I soon found out that most shampoos are for dry or damaged hair so that was making it worse. I got some cheap oily-hair shampoo and didn't bother with conditioner. Hope this helped!

I agree with washing every other day, but there's also oil products specifically made for when your hair is too dry or your scalp is itchy...they work on greasy hair too, if you use them the right way. I use one of these products called icon, because my hair is greasy. Once every two or three weeks (depending on how greasy your hair is), run the oil all through your hair with a wide-toothed comb until it looks disgustingly greasy. leave it in for ten minutes and then take a shower to wash it out. Use a lot of volumizing shampoo until it feels like your hair could get very tangled very easily. Be careful when you do this, and to avoid getting it tangled, only scrub in one direction, i do mine going straight back. Only put enough conditioner to just barely go through all of your hair. The conditioner will get rid of the tangles while only using a small amount will prevent it from getting greasy again. Hope this helps! :)

When you condition, DO NOT condition the roots. That will help.
My hair gets easily greasy too -.-;

I had the same problem, but now i can leave my hair unwashed for 2-3 days, and the day before i wash it i use a spray in dry shampoo called Bastiste, it works really well, and smells good too! You can usually buy it from your chemist. You can even buy a tiny travel size can for ya handbag :)
Hope this helps!
