An Inside Look is a series on GirlsGuideTo.com that showcases real women and their careers. We're digging in and they're dishing out "What It's Really Like..." to have their job, build a career, and reach success in their field. For any of you ladies who love to write and want to write your own book, this one's for you! We interviewed the fabulous Flirtexting girls, Debra Goldstein and Olivia Baniuszewicz about what it's like to be young, hot authors!

Living by the motto, "we date therefore we text," co-author's and bff's Debra and Olivia, demystify the Flirtext in their first book Flirtexting! As single women gallivanting the NYC social scene circa 2006, they began noticing that their cell phones had become a crucial part of their dating lives. These savvy flirts quickly picked up on the fact that texting had become the NEW first step in dating. They knew they weren't the only ones who were mystified by how the game had changed since texting was introduced; so they continued to date, flirt and text, until they felt they had successfully demystified this new flirting trend. Debra and Olivia named this dating phenomenon FLIRTEXTING and put the rules down on paper once and for-all in their popular "how-to" guide, FLIRTEXTING.

1.    What made you decide to write this book?
We kept noticing that all of our girlfriends were having the same conversation about dating and texting, over and over and over. Text messaging made its way into our dating lives and no one out there was addressing the good, the bad, and the ugly that came along with it. One time when we were counseling one another on text messages from guys, we discovered that we had figured out a formula to always getting what we want over text! Right then and there we decided to demystify the flirtext so that all girls could get the inside scoop on how to use text messaging to their advantage.

2.    How did you get started?
We headed straight to Barnes and Noble and bought books on how to get published. We also perused the relationship aisle to see if anything had already been written on the topic. Then, we sat in every café in New York City and wrote our hearts out until we felt confident we had enough material to put in front of agents. Once we landed a passionate agent, she helped us get a publisher. The rest is history. Ultimately it started as an idea and a passion. It was the work behind the idea that brought things to life.

3.    How did you end up where you are today?

Lots and lots of hard work and goal setting. We learned that nothing comes for free and despite a great idea, it wouldn’t sell itself if we didn’t back it up with double the amount of work.

4.    What are the biggest perks about your job?
Research! The day-to-day work is really, really fun. Not many people can expense a night out with their girlfriends! When we were writing our book, the research consisted of going out with lots of fun guys then coming home to document it. We also enjoyed interviewing many people of all ages to get their flirtexting stories and experiences.

5.    Biggest drawbacks?
Writers block. You need to be inspired in order to put out good work.

6.    What’s the biggest misconception people have about writing a book/being an author?
That getting a book published will make you money. Just because you write a book that gets published does not guarantee you money. First time authors get either no, or a very small advance, that you then have to pay back after the book comes out or pump into publicity ventures. So unless you get on Oprah, or make it to the best sellers list, don’t quit your day job!

7.    Name 3 characteristics a person must have to write a successful book.
Passion, determination, discipline

8.    What’s been your biggest accomplishment?
Having the two largest talent agencies in the world fighting over who would represent us. Having folks like MTV, CAA and major national magazines interested in collaborating with us!

9.    In ten years, where do you see yourselves?
Debra: With at least 5 more best selling books on the shelves (our next book is a series), writing from my house in Malibu, and living life to the fullest.
Olivia: Continuing working on projects in the relationship realm. Being bi-coastal (NY-LA) and having the leisure to be self-sufficient off any of the books and work both Debra and I are doing.

10.    What’s a typical day like for you?

Debra:

I work from home so my schedule is as such:
7:30-8:00am: Wake up, check bberry for messages, emails, bbms, get out of bed
8:00-9:00am: Eat breakfast and watch the news
9:00-12:30pm: Run Flirtexxting! Write blogs, answer emails, update Social Media (Facebook and Twitter) about what’s going on in Flirtexting, make calls (catch up with Olivia, our manager Mike), work on 2nd and 3rd books, correspond with lawyers, agent, publisher, producer (all part of the Flirtexting team), write content for magazines who need help from Flirtexting (Cosmo, Men’s Health, InStyle, Elle, Seventeen). Work on Flirtexting Movie, work on Flirtexting TV show.
12:30-2:30pm: Lunch, gym, workout
2:30-6:30pm: More flirtexting work; conference calls, research, PR, update social media
6:30-7:30pm: Watch Tivo! Usually if I only have an hour, I’ll catch up on the Daily Show, the
Colbert Report, and some late night TV (Jimmy, Conan, Jay), oh and Ellen if I have time
7:30-10:00pm: Meet up with friends for dinner
10:00-1:00am: Head out to some hotspots in the city with our group of friends. Going out and being social is part of our job as it always provides inspiration and research for what we have going on. Plus it’s a good time!

Olivia:
I have a day job as a book publicist for a Publishing House

I typically wake up between 7-8am and check email and texts (!) for any immediate flirtexting business. While I get ready for work I always have the Today Show on. It’s a great show that covers what’s going on in the world today (including competing books☺).

I get to work, I scan the cover of the NY Post and NY Times. I listen to NPR Morning Edition to catch up on more news.

I work from 9am to 6pm. Sometimes within the day I squeeze in a call with Debra or any business related matters. Mostly toward end of the work day.

After work I come home and either answer/work on Flirtexting matters alone or go to Deb’s apartment and we do it together depending on what it is. Whatever it is this is always a “zen” type of work atmosphere for me ie) candles lit, dinner, girl talk mode. After things are settled, I love to hit the gym/watch tv/grab dinner/event of some sort. Downtime for me is important to calm the mind and just chill out.

11.    Best piece of advice you’d give to other women?
Strive to become the person you want to marry. That way you will be fulfilled all on your own and do not need to look for fulfillment in anyone else. Once you feel you are a complete, happy, and fulfilled person, you will be able to open yourself up to falling in love. But you will remain unhappy if you think happiness lies in someone else. You are the only person who can make yourself happy and complete.

12.    What’s the biggest mistake women make with guys/dating?
They make themselves too available. One of the most attractive traits a girl can possess is independence. When a girl proves to be independent of her man, that’s that when her man will not want to let her go. When a guy feels like he has won her attention away from the millions of other super important and fabulous things she could be doing and people she could be seeing, it will make him feel special.

13.    What are your favorite hotspots? (ie: vacation spots, cities, restaurants, stores, etc)
We LOVE going to LA, especially Malibu! We go there a lot for business but we also love to go for pleasure. Our favorite hike is in the Pacific Palisades and we always do it at least once before heading back to NYC. It’s so peaceful and beautiful. You can’t help but feel energized and inspired after that hike!

In New York, hotel lounges and restaurants are really fun. We’re really into Hotel Griffou, the Jane Hotel, Café Gitane, The Standard, The Bowery Hotel, Thompson Hotel.
