So you’re in a meeting and receive a text (yes, a TEXT) that your boyfriend no longer wants to date you. Or maybe you’re sitting in class and your test is passed back with a giant “C” plastered in red writing across the page. Well, cheers to passing, but the day isn’t exactly going in your favor. What’s a girl to do when her day has a massive rain cloud over it?
Read on, my friends!
Call A Friend
First thing’s first, call a friend who you can count on to make you laugh. My best friend is the BEST at making me laugh when it comes to a crappy day. Her fake British accent is always rearing to go just as I’m on the verge of tears. Sometimes you just need a cheerleader to get you back on your feet.
Grab Yourself a Latte…
…or your favorite magazine. To regain sanity when my life is in shambles, I pick up my favorite glossy and head to a nearby coffeehouse. Magazines always have self-help articles or hair/makeup ideas that get you excited for the weekend. Even if you’re swamped with things to do, take a moment for yourself while you finish that warm beverage.
Get Yourself a Cupcake
Here’s my philosophy: No one can be sad when you’re eating a cupcake. It’s just not possible. They’re just so cute and mounds of sugary-sweet frosting cure just about anything. So stop counting calories, spend a dollar or two, and eat a cupcake. It’ll make you feel better, I promise.
Have a Dance Party
Sometimes you just need to close the door and blast Beyonce. Okay, so I may have just revealed a deep dark secret of mine, but when I’m in a “mood” I like to strut around my room (alone, don’t you worry) and dance out my frustration. Beyonce’s “Countdown,” Florence and the Machine’s “Dog Days are Over,” and pretty much anything from Foster the People make an instant dance party. Ridiculous? Absolutely. But I’m telling you, it works!
Drive
Go for a drive and listen to music. Blast a tune that suits your mood, windows down and hair flying. Obviously, if you’re super distressed wait until it’s safe. No need to add an accident to your bad day!
Make Something Creative…
…and get inspired by your bad day. If you’re a writer, write. A painter? Paint. A composer? Compose. Browse Pinterest and actually create something from your DIY board. Do something to be proud of, use your creativity to change your mood.
Give Someone Else a Gift or Treat
They say giving is better than receiving, so pick up an extra cupcake and bring it to someone who needs it more than you! It'll also put your day in perspective, even through the bad times there's a lot to be thankful for.
Retail Therapy
It’s a cliché for a reason. It works! But beware: overspending leads to guilt, so don’t worsen your already bad day with credit card debt. Set a limit on how much you’ll spend or search for one item like a killer new necklace or bag. Then you’ll get a little high from what you buy, without killing your budget.
Exercise!
“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands. They just don’t!” Well said, Elle Woods, well said. And before you protest that you just can’t make yourself go hard, remember that walking counts. So grab a girlfriend (see #1) and talk while you get an endorphin hit!
Google Ryan Gosling
Enough said. The images will speak for themselves.
Just Do It
Oh, the joys of sex.
Watch a Summer Heights High Video…
…or any video that makes you smile. Summer Heights High (if you haven’t seen it) is a surefire way to instantly brighten your day. Jonah, Ja’mie and Mr.G will have you falling out of your seat laughing and will be your new best friends. My other fallback? Arrested Development. All the episodes are on Netflix and take only 20 minutes to change your outlook on the day!
