One of the great things about getting married was getting a whole new part to my family. Don’t get me wrong, my family is the greatest (Hi Mom!), but we are small. I have two cousins and two step-cousins…that’s it. So I have loved being inducted into my husband’s family because it is large and loud and boisterous and wonderful.
Every summer we have started taking a vacation to a tiny little place in South Carolina that is heaven. No, I won’t tell you where it is because I am selfish and don’t want to share! Anyway, this is a trip that my husband’s family has taken ever since his grandparents honeymooned in this locale a looong time ago. And through this amazing family tradition was born another: The Foghorn.
This drink is a staple at pretty much any family gathering from May until September. We even served them at our rehearsal dinner as our “specialty cocktail!” They remind me of the beach and laughter and lazy Sunday afternoons. Cheers to that!
The Foghorn
Ingredients
1 to 1 ½ oz gin (depending on how strong you want it)
frozen limeade to taste
ginger ale
crushed ice
Directions
Fill a tall glass with crushed ice. Crushed ice is vitally important, as cubed ice is just not as good. Pour a shot of gin in the glass. Add as many spoonfuls of frozen limeade as you like. I like two or three, my husband likes four or five (he’s not a huge gin fan…but even he loves these!). It’s up to you, there is no wrong way to make a Foghorn.
Then fill your glass with ginger ale. Since these go down like juice, especially on the beach, we use diet ginger ale to keep the calorie count and our guilt low.
Enjoy! Welcome to the family!
