Still haven’t made plans for the 4th yet? Or even worse, haven’t decided what to wear? Whether you’re spending the holiday at the beach, BBQ, or a banquet, we’ve got you covered. All of our picks are wallet-friendly or can be found hanging in your closet. Some items are obviously patriotic while others are understated, although none will make you feel like you're wearing a costume a la Katy Perry.
Keep reading for the Girls Guide To 4th of July fashion finds.
Casual: Beach Bum
If you’re lucky enough to live near the coast or are spending your Fourth by the pool, you can keep your look super casual, but really fun. Instead of buying a pair of shorts you might wear once a year, DIY an old pair that’s just sitting in your closet. Since its impossible (and dangerous) to wear heels or wedges on the sand, stick to the summertime staple, flip-flops. When the sun falls, grab a red or blue vintage shirt to cover up your swimsuit. Even better if the shirt is a little revealing to show off that flag-inspired bikini.
Festive: Pin-Up Inspired
Few fashion styles are more fun than the retro pin-up look. Plus, its old-school style is perfect for celebrating our independence. This pin-up look also has a nautical feel to keep it fresh and not too costume-y. Pull on your favorite pair of white shorts and add interest to the outfit with colorful dots and stripes. Instead of using blue and red, keep this look tame by substituting black. You’ll have the perfect balance of looking patriotic, but not like you’re wearing an American flag. The finishing touches are a hot red lip and matching red nails. This outfit is perfect for that obligatory 4th of July backyard BBQ.
Dressy Casual: Bold Basics
Maybe you’re attending a special event this year for the fourth, or will be stuck in the office part of the day and need an outfit that will be appropriate for both venues. Your solution is to stick to basic yet bold pieces. A solid colored dress in navy or red will be a useful investment since it will work in many situations other than celebrating the fourth. To make the ensemble more festive and flattering, add a thin belt in a contrasting color, and the same goes for your pumps. If that’s too bright for your comfort zone, opt for more neutral silver or tan shades when picking accessories. Any silver jewelry that you already own, like bangles or earrings, will make this outfit just a touch dressier.
