Washington's new marriage law took effect at 12:01 Thursday morning.
Jane Abbott Lighty, 77, and Pete-e Petersen, 85, took an oath while receiving the first same-sex marriage license in King County on Thursday, Dec. 6. Washington state voters upheld Referendum 74 in November. Lighty and Peterson have been together for 35 years.
