How To Be a Wing Woman

Are you happily off-the-market, but have a few friends who are just dying to meet a new guy? If she gets a little too nervous when chatting up a hottie, then you should be your friend’s wing woman. It’s not just for guys anymore, because girls need help sometimes too. Here’s our advice on playing wing woman for your best friend.
Remove Yourself From The Running
Early on, make it obvious that you’re not interested and/or not available so the guy your friend has her eye on will know not to flirt with you, but just your gal pal. Sure, dropping your relationship status within the first minute of meeting someone is obnoxious, so find a way to (naturally) work it into the conversation. You can always just mention that “Jake” might be meeting up with you later, and the point will get across.
Direct The Conversation
If you’re friend tends to clam up when nervous then help guide the conversation along. Mention some of the fun adventures you two have been on. Don’t talk about yourself, specifically, make sure you bring up topics that everyone can relate to.
…But Let Her Talk
While you might have a funny story about the spring break trip you two took senior year, you should let her tell it. You’re not helping your friend impress that guy if she can’t get a word in edgewise.
Be Careful of TMI
Speaking of funny spring break stories, it might be best not to share anything too personal. Don’t embarrass your friend by divulging something she’d rather forget, and that might turn her potential suitor off.
Don’t Be Overprotective
Yes, we love our girlfriends. We’d do anything for them, and we don’t want some guy hurting her feelings. However, you need to let your friend make her own decisions (and possible mistakes.) And make sure you keep a cool head and do not tell the guy just what you would do if he ever hurt your friend. While it may be true, you don’t want to scare him away.
Make Her Look Good
Even if she tells a joke you’ve heard a million times, laugh like it’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard and pretend to be totally compelled by the story you already know the end to. Basically, you want the guy she’s eyeing to see just how amazing everyone thinks your friend is.
Give Her a Pep Talk
When he’s not around, be sure to let your friend know how great she’s doing in her conquest. No matter what, she’ll appreciate the ego boost and have that little extra confidence every girl needs.
Gracefully Bow Out
You’ll know when your work is complete. Now, give your gal and her guy some time alone so they can really get to know each other. Your girlfriend owes you one — remember that.
