Let me put this to you in a simple way: No food + Alcohol = Bad news bears.
A new kind of eating disorder is becoming an epidemic: drunkorexia. Yes. I guess this is the “tanorexia” du jour. Drunkorexia involves starving yourself, then binge drinking when you’re out with your girls. Clearly, it’s super dangerous, because anorexia and binge drinking are each deadly on their own – when combined, they’re especially lethal.
Come on, ladies. Let’s use our brains here. It’s easy to see why this is appealing: Drunkorexia victims like Nakhara Jacques, who’s case is bringing this issue back in the news, starve themselves so that they won’t put on the pounds from their high-calorie binge drinking sessions later. Binge drinking can already kill a normal, healthy person, but binge drinking on an empty stomach is even more dangerous – because drinking on an empty stomach turns you into a drunk “woo” girl faster. But seriously, haven’t we read enough articles reiterating the fact that you can eat well and still have nights out without gaining weight? It’s all about moderation, dears. You can have your cake and eat one piece too.
Something especially scary about drunkorexia? The starvation-binge drinking cycle is pretty common on college campuses, where, especially in sorority culture, there’s a ton of pressure to both drink (especially during hazing) and be thin. Duh.
Jacques recently appealed for help for drunkorexia victims after binge drinking and skipping meals for about two years. Two years? I don’t think I could go two days being a drunkorexic! Think about how awful those hangovers would be… The 18-year old admits to starving herself all day Sunday and Monday so that she can drink to excess in what she calls Monday Madness sessions without putting on weight from the calories consumed in the alcohol.
“On Tuesday, she says she might eat 'a few cubes of melon and some strawberries,' two crackers with a very thin layer of butter - she 'hates butter' - and a few cups of strong tea with very little milk - 'I throw up if I see milk,' she says.
On Wednesday, Nakhara says she always feels as though she is 'getting bigger', so she slows down her already draconian diet plan, eating just two cubes of melon all day before going out drinking.”
Our verdict: OMG! Please ladies, if you think you or a friend have a problem with this or any eating disorder, seek help. Drunkorexia is especially scary because not only are you facing the issues or anorexia, you are dealing with alcoholism too. It’s a double whammy you can’t fight alone.
