Now surely I’m not the only 20-something busy female that is sick to death of reading articles with page after page going on about what we should look like. There are thousands of magazines asking questions like, "do we need that last bite of cupcake"?
Well, yes, I do need that last bite of cupcake; I might even have another cupcake after that too, because I’m too busy trying to be a productive, successful, and independent woman to stress over a tasty treat. And no, I don’t want to swap it for a celery stick either.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I totally agree with having a healthy balanced diet and plenty of exercise, but my question is: Since when did "skinny" and "diets" become our universe? It’s like girls have totally lost their focus and all sense of academic achievement.
Now instead of concentrating on getting that A+ grade or coming first in a science competition, girls are too busy watching celebrity slimming shows, cutting down calories, and booking boob jobs.
Who is this girl with such strong opinions, you might ask? Well, just to put your minds at ease, I am not some sort of frigid book worm who spent high school and college being a total geek. In fact, I chose to have the best of both worlds. Who says we can’t have it all? The only thing that stops us women is ourselves, with our insecurities and fear of failure.
But I’m here to reassure you that we can do it. I will never forget hearing Destiny’s Child "Independent Women" blast out of the car radio for the first time. Ever since then I have been inspired to take charge of my destiny and be the ultimate career girl, I buy my own bags, shoes and clothes (I even bought my very own washing machine).
And I have still managed to maintain my personal life; I have recently just celebrated my 4-year anniversary with my boyfriend and I’m a frequent flyer at numerous bars and clubs with my friends. So ladies, grab life by the balls and say screw the media and the unhealthy messages they force on you! Embrace yourself and life and believe in your inner self when she says you can do it, because believe me you can.
Tips for being a successful and independent women are simple:
Stay focused. Dream big. Don’t take no for an answer. Always believe you can do better.
Unfortunately, the world is a competitive and harsh place without adding weight issues and body image pressure to your already complex existence. Life really is already complicated enough. The world doesn’t wait for anyone. But boy, when you’re winning, my god, you'rewinning.
