Let’s get real here, part of the joy of moving out of your parent’s house and into the dorms or an apartment is having the freedom to hook up whenever you want. However, unless you’re living alone, you still need to take into consideration your roomies. Sure, there might be an accident when you overhear them or they walk into something they’d rather not see, but these situations can definitely be prevented with a little know-how.
Below we break down the basic etiquette for hooking up when you have roommates.
Talk it Out
If you feel too shy to discuss sex with your roommate then you probably shouldn’t be having it. It’s your right to have sex in your home, and your roommate can’t take that away from you, but you need to consider what makes them comfortable. So, at the beginning of the school year or lease, sit down with your roomie to go over what “rules” or guidelines would make each of you comfortable. Maybe you and your roommate can come up with a “sign” that one of you has brought someone home, like the classic scrunchie on the door knob. Or you could even discuss each other’s schedules so that way you can have an intimate moment with your boyfriend while she’s in class.
No one who isn’t currently having sex with you should hear you. Contrary to what is portrayed in porn, it is possible to have sex quietly. If you’re sharing a room, you shouldn’t have sex anytime your roommate is there, even if they’re sleeping. Because how terrible would it be to wake up to the sounds of someone else getting freaky? If you guys happen to share a thin wall, then turn on some loud music or a movie to muffle any extraneous sounds. The kids studying across the hall will appreciate this, too.
No one who isn’t currently having sex with you should see you.It should go without saying, but close and lock the door if you’re having sex. Also, as tempting as it may be, do not have sex in shared spaces or public furniture. This includes the couch in the living room and the kitchen table. You never know when your roommate may show up unexpected and you do not want the first thing they see when walking in to be you and your guy butt naked on the couch.
The Shower is a Great Solution
The shower just might be the perfect place for your naughty rendezvous. It obviously has a built-in clean up feature and is meant for privacy. Just make sure your roommate is comfortable with this location before breaking it in, and make sure you’re not taking a sexy shower when she needs to brush her teeth for class
Remember, Do Unto Others…
If your roommate is having sex behind closed doors, do not disturb them, even if they are a bit too noisy for your comfort. To intrude whether shouting through or knocking on the door is a bad idea. You’re not living in a convent, so be respectful of each other’s sex lives. When you’re in that situation, remember your ear plugs or headphones. If you’re in the dorms go visit up a common room to study for a while. Next time you get your roommate alone, discuss the problem with her. More than likely, she’ll have no idea you could hear and will work with you to prevent that next time.
Always honor the Golden Rule.
Never have sex in your roommate’s bed. Ever.
