The Strangest Question Everyone Asks

When I tell someone new that I'm pregnant, without fail their first question is some variation of "Were you trying?"

In the early days of the pregnancy, the only people I was telling were close friends and family so the question didn't bother me. I supposed that the question stemmed from people's general surprise to learn we even wanted to have a baby. Because they weren't made aware beforehand that we were thinking about parenthood, I believed that everyone assumed that if I were pregnant, we must have had a little "welcomed accident."

But no. As it turns out, EVERYONE asks this question. From co-workers, to casual acquaintances, even perfect strangers!

Even my husband said he gets the question every time he tells someone new.

My typical response is that "we were open to it." His is "that's incredibly personal."

However, I've decided to come up with a short list of new responses that might make people stop to consider ever asking any pregnant woman if they were "trying" or "planning it" ever again:

  • No, but by the time I found it it was too late to have an abortion.
  • No. I got really drunk one night and it just happened. I'm not even sure it's my husband's.
  • Yes. Ovulation is a fascinating process. Vaginal discharge, basil temperature readings, peeing on a stick! Let me walk you through it step by step.
  • No. One night the angel Gabriel visited me and told me, "You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you're to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

Feel free to add your own!

Did they SERIOUSLY ask you if you knew what caused babies? How old do they think you are, ten?

Um... that would be so rude if someone walked up to me and asked me that. I'd probably smack them, but that's just me.

That. Was hilarious.

I have a 12 year old, 11 year old, and a 10 year old..... they are only that way for a month, but yeah they are close! The question I hated the most was, "Don't you know what causes that?"
My answer was, "Yeah I do! Do you?" or "Yep, and I had fun doing it too!" But really people should be more considerate!

Honest- I've asked the question.
I'm in the military, and not stationed in the states.
Many times, when a young, single female soldier comes up pregnant it's after a drunken night.
And then there's some women who I see who just look so worn out from the first trimester madness that I feel it perfectly reasonable to question if that was what they wanted in the first place. Many of them are usually questioning it themselves.
