Summer has officially arrived! Right now we’re craving a quick weekend escape to enjoy the weather and celebrate the season. Summertime means outdoors adventures, whether that’s camping, hiking, hitting up an outdoor festival, or just taking an impromptu road trip, you’ll want to be prepared with a few necessities.
We’ve rounded up our top 10 beauty essentials for that weekend getaway. Now get going!
First up are the fundamental items you’ll want even if you’re really roughing it:

1. Cleansing Face Wipes
After a long day in the sun, few things are more refreshing than cleansing your face of the day’s grime. However, few things are more frustrating than your favorite face wash exploding in your bag all over your clothes. To prevent that mini-catastrophe pick up some cleansing facial wipes to use. My recent favorite are the willa™ Lavender Facial Towelettes. They contain super refreshing aloe and the lavender is incredibly soothing, plus willa™ stays clear of any potentially harmful parabens or sulfates.
2. Bug Repellent
You don’t want to lie awake all night scratching bug bites. Avoid them all together by using a bug repellent as soon as you get outside. We recommend the classic AVON Skin So Soft brand.
3. Sweat-Proof Sunscreen
Sunscreen is always a beauty essential. Grab one high in SPF and that is sweat-proof to stay protected. This one by Banana Boat has “Coolzone” to cool and refresh you each time you apply.
4. Colgate Wisps
Depending on your location, accessing a sink might not be that easy. Keep your breath fresh by using a disposable toothbrush like Colgate Wisps. You won’t have to worry about bad breath after devouring those grilled cheeseburgers with extra onion.
5. Dry Shampoo
No need to hide your hair under a baseball cap after your first day out. Refresh your style by using a dry shampoo. TRESemme has one of the most affordable options around.
6. Deodorant
This one is obvious, but definitely necessary. Bring along your most fresh-smelling and long-lasting deodorant to reapply whenever necessary. My current favorite is Degree Expert Protection. When they say expert, they mean it- this stuff is awesome!
Those are the crucial personal items you’ll want to bring along to keep your sanity on any outdoors trip. Now, if you’ve got room to pack a small cosmetic bag, bring along these beauty basics, too:

7. Headband
In addition to extra bobby pins and hair bands, a headband is a great item to bring along that most people don’t think of. When it’s too humid my hair feels simply too heavy so I’m always putting it up. Instead of rocking a basic pony, use a headband to add some style to your ‘do. This one from ModCloth is super cute and retro.
8. Waterproof Mascara
Waterproof mascara is a lifesaver if you’re spending time in the water. Too much shadow or even eyeliner is going to smudge or wear off in the heat or water, but some mascara will keep your eyes looking defined but not overdone. Find a waterproof style of your favorite brand or try Scandaleyes by Rimmel London.
9. Lip Balm with SPF
Keep your lips protected from UVA and UVB rays too by using a balm with SPF. Plus, a great balm will keep your mouth kissably smooth. Kiehl’s is a great brand with clear and tinted formulas.
10. BB Cream
What’s a BB cream you ask? Only one of the best new innovations in the beauty world. Maybe that’s a bit of a stretch, but they’re awesome. BB creams or “beauty balms” are similar to tinted moisturizers but with extra skincare benefits and built-in sunscreen. Garnier has an inexpensive option, but my preference thus far is Dr. Jart’s Water Fuse Beauty Balm. I received it in my Birchbox for June. It has great lasting coverage, and moisturizes yet doesn’t get greasy. Plus it comes in SPF 25 or 45+. Editor Katie Ostioch loves Clinique's option.
*11. 2-in-1 Lip & Cheek Stain
Yes, a bonus beauty item. When you’re spending time in the great outdoors it’s really not necessary to layer on too many products. It’s all about having fun and enjoying yourself, without worrying about makeup meltdown. But, if you’re like me, and prefer a little more than the bare minimum, use a 2-in-1 product like lip & cheek stain to add more color to your face. Plus, stains are long-lasting even in the sun. Sephora makes a great inexpensive option in an array of colors.
