So let me get this straight: I’m sure by now you’ve heard that New York City’s mayor Michael Bloomberg wants to ban Big Gulps. It’s a great idea, sure, but it will never fly when Burger King is allowed to introduce a Bacon Sundae (ok, and for other reasons too). Seriously? Vanilla soft serve with fudge, caramel, bacon crumbles and a piece of bacon? The salty-sweet dessert clocks in at 510 calories, 18 grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar.

This proposed ban will outlaw the sale of sweetened drinks over 16 ounces that contain more than 50 calories, but you can go into any fast food restaurant and get crap like this or double bacon cheeseburgers? Bah! Granted, I am as much a fan of ice cream sundaes as the next girl, but doesn’t it seem like Bloomberg is only fighting part of the battle? When you can still get high-calorie and high-fat foods pretty much anywhere, how would the proposed ban do anything to fight obesity?

And, all of this is happening at the same time that New York is considering easing up on their pot possession laws. It would reduce possession (of anything up to 7/8 oz, aka, a lot of pot) from a misdemeanor to a penalty. And the fine would be half of the fine for having a large pop!

Our verdict: WTF? Like I said, it’s a great idea. Soda is obviously not good for you, we all know this. And the Big Gulps just make that worse. But it seems a little premature when the Burger King Bacon Sundae exists.

What do you think about the soda ban? Confess: Would you try the new sundae?

I know! Bloomberg even said in an interview that people can just put the soda in two cups instead of one. Good idea, poor execution.

Wouldn't try the sundae and the soda ban, while it had good intentions, is a waste of a law. People can just buy more bottles/can/etc. of the smaller volume drinks and have the same amount as before.
