I have just found out I am pregnant! Crikey it's a bit of a shock. Have I left it too late to take folic acid tablets?? Also, any ideas on what other vitamins I should be taking?

It's not too late you should be taking a prenatal vitamin

Not too late at all and agree with the above - you should take a prenatal vitamin which has higher amounts of folic acid, iron, and calcium content which are especially important for pregnant women....

Agree with both of these comments. Check out this link http://www.webmd.com/baby/guide/prenatal-vitamins for some more specifics about what you should look for in a prenatal vitamin. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

Definitely agree with the folic acid it's super important. This is another great link that helps explain vitamins that you should take http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/nutrientsvitaminspregna...

When I got pregnant I took a prenatal vitamin and I'm just warning you while it's super important it may make you a little bit nauseous at first (at least it did for me). Congratulations!!!

Okay, No one has even asked you if your keeping the Baby?
I hope yu dont mind me asking these things.
But are you going to keep the baby? Put it up for adoption? Or get an abortion?
Cause all the things you need to do depends on whether or not your having the baby.
But i wish you good luck with whatever you plan on doing.
xO

Um, this makes no sense. She sounds like she's keeping it, but the baby still deserves to be nurtured and DO NOT depend on weather or not she is giving it up for adoption. It still has to develop correctly and it's cruel to not give it the best chance if you don't want it! And I'm pretty sure she's not going to waste the time on asking about vitamins or buy them if she's getting an abortion... She seems happy, just caught off guard.

you shuld be taking prenatels, fish oil/omega3s, have a low sodium diet, high salt can cause toximia, and eat as healthy as possible, just dont eat unprocessed foods like milk cus it can cause problems. talk to a nutritionist if you can there should be a clinic around if you cant afford one.

whatever you do, dont have an abortion! i was adopted and im glad because im enjoying life. rich family, spoiled rotten... ;-)

Good for you, but sometimes abortion is a very good option (and should stay as an available option for women). Bad example though, not every kid put up for adoption don't get into a "rich family" and spend most of their lives in and out of foster care. It's her decision and her body, not your's so be respectful and keep your opinion out of it .I really hate it when people instantly start trying to make decisions for another person when it's clearly none of your business. She never even mentioned abortion, she's asking about folic acid. Keep on the topic, please.

How far along? And it's never really too, so start ASAP! Some stuff is already developed in a few weeks, but the brain and ears and eyes and individual body parts like fingers and organs still have a ways to go! Eat as healthy as possible!

Fish oils (but don't eat actual fish...Mercury poisoning!) and Folic acid and other minerals and vitamins are all VERY important!

My OB told me that certain kinds of fish were okay in moderation when I was pregnant. Like wild salmon, never farmed salmon, and tuna like once a week at most. The key is moderation. My baby turned out as healthy as can be without any threat of mercury poisoning. I just wanted to point that out.

take prenatal vitamins, and folic acid...you mite have 2 try a few different types of prenatal vitamins, bcuz my sister just recently had a baby and she had to switch to different kinds bcuz of reactions...nothing would harm the baby or her just made certain things uncomfortable so if one type does cause discomfort just try a different kind yu dnt hav 2 stick with the same one..it took her a few trys b4 she didnt have any discomfort

before anything else visit your OB-GYNE, I suggest you choose someone who really takes time to listen and the one that cares. She will let you know the REAL DEAL and all the things you need to know! Plus as RN I suggest that you be very cautious since the FIRST TRIMESTER is the most important stage since it where's the baby's all body and organ developing.

I didn't know I was pregnant until I was three months into my pregnancy (I often miss periods when starting new medications, so this was normal for me until the third missed period). It is never too late to take vitamins! Folic acid is very important. Talk to your OB. He/she should know about what kinds are best. The cheaper ones are usually all you need (including the folic acid) but there are prescription prenatals you can take that have a lot more of the good stuff in them ;) Some also have stool softeners for those less-than-pleasant pregnancy side effects (those were my personal favorite). My OB even gave me several months worth of prescription prenatal samples she had, so asking yours opinion can't hurt.

Congratulations! Talk to your doctor and do as much research as you can because what works for some may not work for you but coming from my major and learning about this, you should research everything you take and read read read the labels because there are so many things out there that can harm your baby and it is so important to get as educated as you can! I noticed some mentioned fish and the mercury in most fish can really harm your baby, it is important to eat fish to keep your baby healthy but it is restricted to certain kinds of fish. Good luck and I hope you take the time to research everything!!!!! This is an exciting time in your life!
