I would go with a PC, especially if you're on a budget. Macs aren't bad, but they are *ridiculously* expensive. You can buy a good quality PC for about 1/3 the price of a Mac. Their operating system is kind of difficult to get used to, as well. >.<
I have had PCs FOREVER, then started working on Macs through my job and bought myself a Mac for school. It was the BEST decision I have EVER made! Macs' are so user friendly, you don't have to worry about viruses eating away at your computer like you do with the PC's, their staff at the Mac store is always SO helpful when answering any questions and plus Mac just has a lot of cool extras that make having a Mac fun!!! Plus my Mac is quick start up, long lasting battery - all the things that I HATED in my PC!
Good Luck and I promise you will be happier with a Mac!
It depends entirely on what you want to do with your computer. If you're more into graphics stuff, or movie/music-making, I'd say go for a mac. If you're just going to be writing papers, and are interested in a more direct connection with your computer, get a PC with Linux. You can also get UNIX on the mac, though.
All in all, I'd say just try other people's computers, see what you like, and do a lot of reading. One is not better than the other; it's just what you want to use them for.
I would say, don't buy a dell. I hear about a lot of people having problems with them.
Go with a Mac. It's all about the value with the machine you're getting. All of the parts and software are designed and assembled by the same company. Apple has been number one in computer customer service for ten or more years now. The new batteries in all of the laptops (MacBooks and MacBook Pros) are energy star rated and can last seven hours on a single charge. The aluminum unibodies of the MacBook Pros are incredibly durable and lightweight. Macs also come with the iLife suite, which includes iMovie, iPhoto, Garage Band, iWeb, and iDVD. Any computer running a Windows OS can't even touch that. Plus, almost all Windows computers come with a whole bunch of extra crap installed that the average user doesn't know how to (and possibly can't) get rid of. Lastly, if you really need to, you can install a Windows OS on your Mac and use Boot Camp so you can start up your Mac either on the PC or its native Mac side.
Also, despite what Laura said, the OS isn't hard to get used to at all. I actually find it a lot more intuitive than any Windows OS.
Really, it's mostly operating system preference, but there are a lot of other things to take into consideration. As far as graphics/normal use goes, both computers handle both quite well.
And I agree with Emma. Don't go with Dell if you get a PC.
in my opinion, atless you need a mac for specific programs ex- illustrator, adobe photoshop, etc. your better off getting a pc. they are much cheaper, go with windows 7. windows has equivalent programs the majority of the time also.
I say go for a Mac. You can run Windows on it if you don't like Mac OS, and it is possible to run both operative systems at the same time. Even better, the new MacBook comes with BootCamp pre-installed :)
And if you're a techno-freak like me, you'll learn how to use it in no-time :)
DEFFO a mac!!!!!
I like PC. My aunt's husband sells macs and everyone in my house as one, but me and im proud of it. I just dont like macs. I like my windows :)

Get a PC, then you can install Linux and stick it to Bill Gates and Steve Jobbs. Macs just make you look like a stuck-up coffee-house twat.
Go with Mac, but buy it at the Apple store.
