1. Have fun meeting new people.
2. Don't be intimidated by the overwhelming "newness" of this chapter of your life.
3. Study hard, but don't forget to come up for air!
1. If possible, visit the college/university beforehand.
2. Do protect yourself and learn about emergency phones around the campus
3. If you have your own car, get a parking permit in advance
4. If you don't have your own car, learn the public transportation routes in advance
5. College is your makeover, what you didn't do in high school (like join a club or association), do it when you get on the campus
6. Meet new people (in a good way- not in a bar or some college party, in a setting like Advice #5).
7. Make your grades a priority, this gets you scholarships, federal aid, and a better slot into graduate school.
8. Don't be afraid to change majors, I've already done it 7 times and still working on my BA.
9. Make the connection and network with professors and club advisors (usually professors) this is your letter of recommendation, reference on a resume, lead into a job or internship.
10. Stay focused by keeping your own mantra. This is mine: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"- Confucius.
since i just started cOllege, i cOuld offer yOu sOme lessOns that i've just learned:
1. Be friendly, yOu'll need sOmeone tO hang out with.
2. Don't be afraid tO ask questiOns on where yOur classes are.
3. Bring extra cash, cOllege isn't cheap!
4. Make a gOod first impressiOn, dOn't gO overbOard on the first day sO keep it simple yet casual.
5. Make time fOr studying, hang out with the smart kids whO can actually help yOu!
The best advice my daddy ever gave me:
"Always remember: the people who are your best friends your first day, aren't going to be your best friends your last."
It's very true. Expect changes, and let yourself learn to deal with people. The most valuable lessons in life don't come from text books.
Also, never forget that everyone has a story. Don't be too hard on them, or yourself.
1) Whatever you did at High School doesnt matter anymore (apart from acceptance into classes), so forgive and forget
2) Dont try to be someone that youre not - it will only end with tears
3) If flatting, try to get a warm house - the cold can really affect your grades as its hard to study in a cold dark room
4) Budget well! Shoes are nice but a healthy diet can be expensive to maintain, and although a can of soup can serve four, your flatmates will not appreciate it as an everyday meal throughout consecutive weeks
5) Learn to use the University Library in your first week - Its not like the one at High School - if you are studying the Sciences you should learn about databases and peer reviewed articles ASAP! will save you time and grade embarrasment
6) Your old friends may look like their lives are growing and changing more than your own - with children, houses, jobs - Just remember, those things are not impossible to receive after graduation, whereas mortgages, children and full time jobs can often prevent you from furthering study. With the recession, this is a great time to study and having degrees, both undergraduate and postgraduate can only increase your value in the workplace
7) enjoy yourself, work hard and reap the rewards of further education!
(from someone with four years of positive and negative experiences)
1. work hard
2. give ur self rest
3. don't walk alone at night
4. surround ur self with good ppl who will have ur back
5. don't be ashamed of asking for help
6. learn ur way, not ur parents, u learn the way u learn not how they want u to learn
7. learn that its ok to make mistakes
and never forget who u r... u can get loss in the sea of uncertainty
1. Study hard but also make time to enjoy yourself.
2. Enjoy the independence.
3. Keep in touch with old friends as well as the new.
4. Act responsibly.
5. Make the most of your time at college, have a good time.
1. study regularly, don't start before the exams! That will make it a lot easier for you!
2. try to do something relaxing too, where you can relieve the stress =)
3. don't eat fast food everyday, try to be creative and make some nice but easy meals yourself. Eating healthy makes you study better!
4. don't hesitate to ask for help, it's normal that everything looks much harder, it is much harder than highschool so it's nothing to be ashamed of!
5.don't skip too many classes, if you miss one once in a while, it won't make that much difference
6.learn, discover something about yourself! At college you find out what you really want to do in your life and what your interests are. If you don't like a subject, you shouldn't feel forced to continue it, you should have the courage to quit. But of course don't quit too easily when a little thing is not going right, you have to have perseverance sometimes! Keep your endgoal in sight!
7.try to find people who are at the same level as you, at college usually there are lots of different sorts of people so you don't have to pretend someone you're not
8. crying is ok (like someone else said here already), I think a lot of people are overwhelmed with all the new things, you are also much more on your own than in highschool, so being afraid for the unknown is normal. If you keep having problems with this, than don't hesitate to talk to someone about it
Be really careful not to get into credit card debt! Credit card companies often target college students by wooing them with free pizzas and t-shirts. This is usually the beginning of a long road of debt and developing bad money habits- beware!
Leaving home to start college is like shedding your old skin. All the memories...the connections..the love...the familiarity...and now you've been dropped into a total different atmosphere where ramen noodles are your best friend, and roomates become sisters.
When starting college make sure you don't blow all your funds on college wear, school spirit logos and items, food...and dates. Make sure you manage your money wisely. Do you really need this? Money is important in college. You don't have your mommies and daddies slippin you a check every day. SOme of you do lol. But some of us don't.
Start college first and see how hard the burden of classwork and homework is...how late will you be up all night doing homework? You need to prepare extra time in the day, in the morning...to do this if you work, or need a job. Make sure you are AHEAD OF YOUR WORK.
If you are single...be single for the first few months. Don't go dating around, it pulls you from the different groups of people you could hang out and get to know instead of your bf's friends. Its a lot easier, trust me.
Respect your roomie. Hey she has to share just as much as you do. Make sure you clean up all your messes, and please don't hit the snooze button every 5 seconds. Be open with your roomie at all costs.
Being away from home isn't easy. I cried myself to sleep almost every night, and i was like 30 states away from my home in Florida. Home sickness comes natural in college. Keep in touch with your family as much as you can, and subsitute your aching sadness with an activity. :)
Stay away from boys you think are just 'friendly' Most likely they see you're new, young and maybe even naive and will try to take advantage of that. Just be careful and focus a majority of your attention on getting through your courses. Don't fall for any guy traps.
1- try to find a new friends
2- stay away from boys that just wanna have fun by girls under th name of friendship
3-be smart
4- tryto work harder
5- don't forget to keep in touch with ur old ferinds
6-paractiseur talent that u love....
(1)Designate a goal for every year you are in school. Start with what your goal is for freshman year and try to accomplish it. Over the summer, plan a new goal for sophomore year and so on...
(2)Don't automatically assume that your new friends are the best friends ever. Keep close to those you have back home as much as possible. Being in my senior year of college, this is the most important step I neglected.
(3)Try to meet as many ppl as possible. Don't stick to one group of friends. By the time you are in your core classes for your major, you will see the same people every day and wish you could be exposed to more of campus.
(4)Do homework, go to class, visit the library, go bowling, surround yourself with activities to keep you busy, healthy, and entertained. This helps with hardships of leaving the place you grew up.
(5)Never been too busy to take time and tell those you don't get to see as often now that you love and miss them. They are the reason you made it to college and deserve to be acknowledged as much as they possibly can!
1. its ok to cry
2. you dont need your whole life in your room
3. dont let your roommate walk all over you

very true. when people get to college, they get clingy so they wont be alone. true friends may take a bit to make so dont be too trusting yet

this is all really good advice. my sister just started her freshman year in college, so i'll defintaly have to forward this to her. :)
Be really careful not to get into credit card debt! Credit card companies often target college students by wooing them with free pizzas and t-shirts. This is usually the beginning of a long road of debt and developing bad money habits- beware!
Take college serious - it does affect your future HOWEVER enjoy it...you're only this age once. God Bless.
