My new year's resolution is to work out and I've been really good about it but I need new gym shoes ASAP!!! I went to the store the other day and got so overwhelmed by all the different types out there. I would normally just buy what I thought looked cute but I want to be "responsible" and buy a pair that are good for the gym. Any suggestions?

fitness and cuteness r bth important so find tose kind of shoes tat r gud fr gym and as well as cute also!!
Maybe those new Reebok ones that are supposed to give you better thighs, butt, etc?
asics are great for running, and new balance are best if you have wide feet. new balance are great for arch support also, even for reg width. they also are pretty good for ankle support, if you get the higher cut ones. nikes aren't great for running, they're poorly made- the treads fall apart pretty fast, but for in gym use, they are fine, some have pretty good arch support. of course the more you spend the better the shoe, but don't just pick up the highest priced pair you see, there are different shoes for different purposes, and you have to buy for what you're using them for. they also need to fit well, a little bigger is better than too small if you can;t get it perfect.
You really need to get fitted by a specialist because each shoe is made for a different width foot and is also designed differently depending on whether you roll your foot in or out eg a shoe designed for a foot that rolls in will have more arch support whereas one for rolling out will push you foot inwards. So in otherwords if you get the wrong type you might end up increasing any foot problems
The type of shoe also depends on the type of exercise you plan to do. If your planning on doing a range of exercise eg bike, tredmill, aerobics classes and weights a cross trainer shoe will be better however if you plan to mostly run a shoe designed for running is better as they have a softer sole
I dont know where you live but if you can get to an athletes foot store and get fitted properly that would be the best option otherwise talk to the shop assistant, they might be able to help you figure it out.
but other than that my reccomendations would be new balance of Ryka. Ryka are really good, there designed to fit the shape of females foot (yes there are differences between male and female feet) and give really good support. And finally dont give up comfort for looks at the end of the day its only the gym and you go there to make your body look good, not look good while you work out (and anyway if your getting a good workout you should look crap, no one looks good sweaty :P)
And one last thing, to the girl suggesting the rebok trainers I'm pretty sure that there designed for walking as they are heavyer to make your legs work harder but as far as running or aerobics is concerned there not benificial
Hope this all helps :)
