I need some motivation to get my butt to the gym. I always say that I'm going to go but when it comes down to it -- I never do. I'm thinking maybe if I hear other people's motivation I'll actually find a reason to drag myself there.

You go girl! Having some imagination and something other than shallow vanity to motivate yourself! Such a rarity in these days. ^^

It's a chance for me to get away from everything really and it's personal time for myself. I'm going to the gym for myself, so I can feel good in my own skin and making small achievements each time I go to the gym. It's a way for me to de-stress. :)

You'll feel very pleased about yourself afterwards! You can be very proud that you convinced yourself to go. The more often and the longer you go, the more you get out of it! It will be more and more rewarding after a while, you won't be able to stop anymore ;-) Good luck and have fun!

I guess it depends on the person, I don't like beeing surrounded by others while sweating, not wearing makeup, also worring on what to wear, who to go with, what should i bring, do i have batteries for my mp3player, how is the traffic .. etc.. so the best thing that works for me is running for 30-45 min. a day in my house on my own treadmil while watching TV or listening to music, it helps if you have a time limit that way you give yourself a deadline and creat a routine. good luck!

Motivation is key to doing something that you LOVE! The gym is great and I used to do it because it was the only way for me to loose weight or get fit after being such an avid swimmer in college and high school. Then I discovered something totally different, yoga, to be more specific Bikram yoga, I LOVE IT! And have found what really drives and motivates me, I go on a daily basis because its such an addiction for me. "Its my healthy addiction," as I call it.
First ask yourself, are you really going to the gym because you love it or because you HAVE to? Then, if your just doing it because you have to then its really not the way to go. I would suggest taking other classes that the gym might offer like aerobics, to get your heart pumping, or even yoga like I have (theres a plethora of options here), and or try other disciplines like kick boxing and or aerobics which incorporates dancing or weights. GOOD LUCK! :)

Motivation is something I'm terrible at.
But after being in a slump for a while, I realized I'd been going nowhere and that I needed to get my act together.
So I got a treadmill, and now I just get up and workout. And it works really well, even though I don't have a lot of motivation. I just put on some music that I can work out to, and get on my treadmill for about 25 minutes, once or twice a day. I've actually lost quite a bit of weight :)

Ive always had that problem. ive come to realize, that for me at least, the gym is the last place i want to be. Sweaty people and machines and running on a treadmill or lifting weights, it makes me want to avoid it at all costs. plus gym memberships are super expensive. I suggest you save your money and find other activities that will help you stay in shape. I hike, take walks, swim, ride horses, have pick-up games of basket ball or soccer or softball with friends. Id much rather be losing weight and staying fit outdoors than be on a machine that is counting every step i take and every calorie i burn. Its also fun if you have someone to go with, especially hiking, and ive even used hiking as a 'first date', its more fun than the bar scene and you get to enjoy nature while getting to know someone new(or re-getting to know the person you are already with).

If it weren't for my recent surgery I'd be going right now, but at the moment I find reason to go for one amazing reason: ZOMBIES. Yes, you heard me correctly. And you may find it weird but it actually does work. Ok, look at it like this: An outbreak of some virus makes violent killing creatures that are ready to rip you apart. All the fatties will be the first to go because they can't keep up a run for as long as a person in shape can. So human nature is to survive. Imagine it like you are preparing yourself for a situation where you are ready to win. Because when the fatties are gone, you'll wish there was something slower than you that you can have as a safety net.

.....

needless to say I find it works better than saying you want that summer look now, or you want to fit into those jeans, or you want to just be skinny for whatever other generic reason.

Cardio man. And weights: you're gonna need to be able to pull yourself up those high walls if you come to a dead end in an alley with a high gate.
