Join the local red cross

Find something you're interested in online (helping homeless/poverty stricken, children, animals, the disabled, elderly, etc) and CALL them. Sometimes they will seem to blow you off or not take you seriously, but that's just because most likely the organization is under-staffed. It takes a little persistence to get on as a volunteer at a place. And giving to charities is also a glorious help, without donations there would be no gift to give... The world is a better place because of people who help out of the goodness of their heart :)

Well I am not sure how into the medical field you are, but hospitals always have some sort of volunteer program. I know I volunteer at the hospital by my college campus and it's just once a week for two or three hours, so it's very convenient! :)

If you're an animal lover you can check out volunteer opportunities at local shelters/Humane Societies (they always could use help). They can always use people to help take care of the pets in the shelter as well as fostering some of them or even helping out in their pet supply stores located in the building (if they have one).

Ask at the church near you. they always have work to do. (:

Every year at this time, I donate coats to "one warm coat". It is real easy, and makes you
feel good. Not to mention the people that will be warm this winter. Just find a donation station
near you, and drop off a coat or two you are no longer wearing. Doesn't cost you a dime.
One year I donated 6 coats. I don't know how many I will donate this year, but I will definitely
being participating. Everyone can do it.Many will benefit. (-;

The Muscular Dystrophy Association...it covers 43 diseases and they are so rare so few people know about them. We need so much help-you can look up your local office. They are all over the place, in SoCal alone we have 7 offices.

what are you into? do you like working with kids? the elderly? animals? I'm sure that you could call your local hospital and see if they have anything for you to help with in the children's ward. What about habitat for humanity? What about your church? I bet with the holidays coming up you could help at a food drive or something.
