I have been working at this place for 6 months 5 days a week -- 40 hours a week, now my boss is a 73 years old lawyer and she treats me like dirt and talks down to me like I am nothing. She tells me yesterday that we don't get along and I need to find another job and that I can stay there until then. But I am going to school in Jan., so I don't know what to do. If I leave I can't collect? I'm so confused!!*

I was fired from an attorneys office, where I was also treated very poorly. The reason was allegedly mixing the small paper clips with the large. No joke. They offered to keep me on for longer but then started waging a smear campaign so I just left. If your situation is half as crazy I suggest running and taking your self esteem and sanity with you.

I would meet with HR to discuss the situation and have it documented. They might offer you a severants package. If not, you'll proabbly help to improve working conditions for the next person.

I had a similar situation. I had two lawyers that were very mean to me. I got sick of it so finally I called a meeting. I told them it was an atmosphere I no longer wanted to work in and I was unhappy. I would be working there for 2 more months and in the mean time if they wanted me to help train someone new I was willing to help with the transition. They were shocked that I called a meeting and I think I caught them off guard. They let me work the rest of the week then they called me in their office on Friday and said they wanted me to leave immediately, because there was no point in me staying somewhere I was unhappy. I filed for unemployment. It was granted they appealed and had a lawyer. It was little me against 3 lawyers and of course they lost. But I knew it was still not right and I appealed that decision. In the end I won. I only ended up collecting unemployment for those 2 months, but it was my way of getting back at them. I would be careful about mentioning to your boss about going back to school. I believe in some states you cannot collect unemployment while in school. Good Luck!

I actually agree with both of the above comments. Don't let yourself be bullied! If you are worried about unemployment, talk to your local office with your story. Otherwise, stay on until you are let go! Especially if you've only got a short time left there anyway.

Don't leave until you are officially let go! If you feel comfortable you can start searching for another job, but since you said you'd only be working for another 2 months I'd stick it out. I have a feeling she is just a crabby person in which you don't need to be responsible for unless she fires you. If it gets worse, call her into a meeting or talk to your HR person about how to handle this.

My father is a really influential businessman in our city, and he says this:

You should go to the unemployment insurance office and tell them your story. Not always when you leave does it mean you can't collect.

When someone like that, especially a boss, bullies you, you should leave as soon as possible.
